Is it safe to make a water-pipe out of sculpey? (Not the bowl part, just the water chamber)?
I am really tempted to make myself a water-pipe out of sculpey clay, the kind that you fire in an oven. I will not be applying flame to any part of it. My idea is to make the classic water-pipe or “bong” shape and put a metal tube to be permanetly attached to it on the inside, into which another metal tube with the bowl attached can be easily slid in and out of.
No fire will touch the pipe, just the bowl, and even then the metal tube that’s actually touching the clay shouldn’t have a chance to heat up very much, especially with the cooling effects of the water. Does anyone thing this would be alright? I don’t want to make something that has the risk of emmiting harmful toxins into the smoke when I use it. Any thoughts?
(I might post pics if/when I make it)
i would strongly advise against this. sculpey is not approved for making food/beverage containers, because the toxins can get out even without heat. the smoke would be passing through water that is in contact with the sculpey, picking up toxins that leach into the water.
on the other hand, if you were really worried about toxins, you wouldn’t be smoking
