Cancer from pipe-smoking?
I smoked a pipe daily for eight years from the time I was twenty-six until I was thirty-four, then gave it up after visiting a fellow pipe-smoker in cancer ward. His condition was shocking, and he was only in his mid-forties.
Now, close to sixty years-old, I am extremely tempted to start smoking a pipe again (I like the taste, and it gives me a sort-of foreign correspondent look!).
This (comparatively) late in life, would it really pose a great risk to my health? I have maybe, based on family history and some current health problems (not extremely serious), maybe another twelve to fifteen years to live. Would pipesmoking severely shorten that span?
No, you will be fine. People are genetically drawn to cancer, the pipe smoking of the other guy had nothing to do with it. So I say fire up the briar with some good pipe tobacco.
