QUIT SMOKING ADDICTION
For Christians, is it wrong for me to do hypnotherapy to quit smoking?

I realize that God does not want us to “empty” our minds and be open to whatever, but if I have a therapist that i trust, isn’t this better than continuing with this addiction that I can’t seem to break? It has worked for so many people. I am a little confused. How can this turn out bad for me if I quit smoking? I HAVE tried prayer, but I guess I’m just weak and need to take more steps. Do you think this is ok?

I believe that God does not want us to sit away waiting for him to fix all our problems. He will not move the mountain for us until we begin taking steps toward it with the faith that he will move it. So you need to do more than just pray and wait. You need to begin to take steps toward your goal if you want God to help you, even if this is hypnotherapy (which isn’t “emptying your mind”).

However, as an aspiring psychiatrist, I also know that hypnotherapy is not always effective. Hypnosis can only make you do what you are truly willing to do in the first place. If you are not willing to try to quit on your own, then I don’t know how effective hypnosis would be for you at the moment. I’d suggest using your willpower first to begin trying to cut down on cigarettes and perhaps using nicotine patches to wean your body off of the chemicals (neurotransmitters to be exact) that you are addicted to. When you feel the urge to smoke, pray and read the Bible. When you have cut down the cigarettes, THEN I’d say go for the hypnotherapy.

But again, I’m only studying psychiatry in school right now. I’m not a real doctor. But this is my suggestion based on what I’ve learned in school and what I’ve seen happen in real life. Its a matter of willpower and will cannot be magically granted through God or through hypnosis.
